Joyce Kilmer, “Trees”

sharingpoetry:

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Before the words “namby-pamby”, “weenie”, or “not the way they did things in my day” start flowing across your lips, take a look at these numbers:

2009-2010 (Before new approach)

798 suspensions (days students were out of school)
50 expulsions
600 written referrals
2010-2011 (After new approach)

135 suspensions (days students were out of school)
30 expulsions
320 written referrals
“It sounds simple,” says Sporleder about the new approach. “Just by asking kids what’s going on with them, they just started talking. It made a believer out of me right away

To My Friendly Campus Dopamine Trigger

Our last words were only “hey” and “hey”

But we needn’t this tension in our air

We can take this affair slow or nowhere

But please, at least give me the time to play

All records conclude I can come on strong,

Leave devastation like a hurricane,

Or charge out early like a foreign train

It should be no surprise we got off wrong

Allow, beautiful mister, if you will

To let you and I have a clean new start

We can talk about Marx or books or art

Whenever you’re looking for time to kill

With a giggle, a touch, a well-timed kiss

We could go further, ‘cause what would it hurt?

In crowds, if you wish, we could quietly flirt

With prudence, we could keep it all to this

I would be uncooth to ask for any more

Than a friendly smile from your handsome face,

So send me away and I’ll keep my place

But if you’d like to come, knock on my door

Dear ship passing too quickly in the night

I’d like to put myself in your sight
